Petitions

Say NO to Crabinacup sold at Walmart! Such humiliation and animal cruelty against hermit crabs must not be tolerated.
Say NO to the painted shells sold in many pet stores! Hermit crabs are not toys, nor are their shells.
You can help our protest by signing the petitions and joining many other crabbers in the battle for the respect of hermit crabs.

Bullying

The Problem

Fighting between two hermit crabs can happen any time, anywhere, but compared to many other pets, hermit crab bullying is uncommon. There are several reasons why hermit crabs can start fights with others. The amount of damage inflicted upon the victim also varies, depending on how strong the aggressor is and the shell that the victim is wearing. When a fight is occurring, you may hear loud chirping sounds from the aquarium.
If you are fortunate enough to be in the scene of one hermit crab attacking another, isolate both the victim and attacker in separate isolation units for several days. The attacker needs time to calm down while the victim needs time to recover. Otherwise, if the attack has already occurred and the victim is injured or streaking, carefully move it to an isolation unit to recover. For more information how to deal with streaking hermit crabs, read the Streaking page. If you can identify who the attacker was, isolate it too in another isolation unit.

Crab-on-Crab Violence

Newcomers:
Introducing new hermit crabs to an aquarium may initiate fights. Usually, the newcomers are the victims, although they are capable of being the attackers too. This is why we recommend isolating the newcomers in isolation units for a few days before introducing them to everyone else. Once you think it is time, give both the newcomers and your old hermit crabs a bath together so they develop the same scent. This helps them bond together more easily.
Shell fights:
Some hermit crabs are willing to fight for a shell that they are interested in, even if it is already occupied by another hermit crab. The aggressor will rock the victim forwards and backwards in attempt to drive the victim out of its shell. If the victim is strong enough and can fit inside its shell fully so that the big claw can cover the opening, it has a decent chance of withstanding the aggressor. Otherwise, the victim may be left naked without a shell with missing limbs. A streaking hermit crab must be carefully placed back into a shell to prevent its abdomen from drying out.
Moulting:
A post-moult hermit crab without a hardened exoskeleton is very vulnerable to attacks. Their shell can easily be stolen during this time, therefore it is important to isolate moulters from others. In the worst cases, some moulters have had all their limbs torn off by the attacker or even eaten alive by cannabalistic hermit crabs.
