Hiding All the Time

Hermit crabs are not exactly nocturnal animals, but they tend to be more active at night. They seem to do all their eating and drinking when you're asleep, so do not worry if you think your hermit crabs are not eating. Many hermit crab owners complain that their hermit crabs remain buried in the subtrate for days or even weeks, but refrain from digging them up, as this can stress them, especially for moulters. For the first few days upon after arriving home with your new hermit crabs, let them dig under the sand. This will help them calm down in their new environment. One way of checking whether the food has been eaten by your hermit crabs is to cut the food into cubes with straight sides. Any small "pinches" to the sides will indicate eating.

Weakness

Rather than worrying about your hermit crabs being under the sand for too long, you should be concerned if your hermit crab refuses to move and stays closed in its shell above the surface for weeks. This is an indication that something has gone wrong. Although this may be a pre-moult symptom, it may also indicate that the hermit crab was not fed enough nutrients from its diet. Try giving the hermit crab a bath to see if it is willing to peek out of its shell. If yes, place it in the food dish with spirulina, vegetables and meat or some of its favourite treats. After feeding, separate the hermit crab into an isolation unit.
If the hermit crab is too weak to feed itself, you may need to hand-feed the hermit crab. Add a small amount of honey to the end of a toothpick and sprinkle some small flakes of spirulina on the honey. Position the toothpick in front of the hermit crab's mouth parts without touching it. If you are lucky, the hermit crab will extend its mouth parts to feed on the honey and spirulina. Repeat this about once every one or two days until your hermit crab seems to regain its strength, or it may even moult. If it does moult in the isolation unit, do not disturb it in any way. For more information on moulting, read our Moulting page. If you need help setting up an isolation unit, visit our Isolation Units page.
