Petitions

Say NO to Crabinacup sold at Walmart! Such humiliation and animal cruelty against hermit crabs must not be tolerated.
Say NO to the painted shells sold in many pet stores! Hermit crabs are not toys, nor are their shells.
You can help our protest by signing the petitions and joining many other crabbers in the battle for the respect of hermit crabs.

Streaking

Attention Seeking

Hermit crabs without a shell must be attended to immediately. Streaking can be caused by something irritating deep inside the shell, being the victim of a shell fight, mites, overheating or for no apparent reason.
If the streaking hermit crab is still alive, get a glass and put in some sand on the bottom. Gently place the naked crab in the glass. Wash out his old shell with warm dechlorinated water to check if there is anything inside that is poking his abdomen. Use a cotton bud stick if necessary. At the same time, keep the abdomen of the streaking hermit crab moist by misting it softly with warm dechlorinated water.
Once the shell is cleaned out, carefully coax the hermit crab to wiggle back in its original shell (if it hasn't been taken by another hermit crab) or find a similar shell. Keep trying until the hermit crab finally stays permanently inside the shell. Some hermit crabs may crawl out of their shells again after a few minutes, so keep trying to coax it to stay in its shell.
Once inside the shell, give the hermit crab a warm bath to clean the exoskeleton, in case there are mites crawling on the hermit crab. If there are indeed mites, you'll need to either wash and bake the sand in the aquarium, or throw it out and buy new sand. For more instructions on bathing, visit our Water page.
After the bath, isolate the hermit crab in an isolation unit with some spare empty shells for a few days to relax. Keep the isolation unit in a warm, humid, dark place. Remember to check on the hermit crab frequently to make sure that the hermit crab hasn't crawled out of its shell again. If the hermit crab insists crawling out again, post a message for help on our Forums.
