Petco Pre-Mixed Saltwater

Post by Salt and Pepper »

I saw this at the Petco Online store and wanted to see if it was safe or not.

You do not want any ocean/sea/salt mixes geared towards hermies. You want an ocean/sea salt that is specifically made for salt water fish tanks. Like these ocean mixes The one that I think is sold in a smaller packet, and least expensive is the Oceanic Natural Sea Salt As you will see, the smaller packet shown is about $4-$5. That packet also makes 5 gallon of ocean mix.

Edited to add: And Petco carries the same Oceanic too and is back where their fish salts are, same as Petco's NOT in the hermie section.

Almost everything marketed for "hermit crabs" is dodgy. No-one knows if those products are tested. However, with the case of fish, being more popular pets, you can be assured that the products have been tested.

I checked in the fish and they were out of Oceanic.

It seems after buying this non-approved mix, then this post was made asking about it.
It appears there are 2 posts going on about this saltwater:

S&P - Petco sells, along with the Oceanic, a Red Sea Salt salt water aquarium mix that I've seen and that I know others use successfully. Maybe you could try that?

Petco also carries Instant Ocean in the smaller boxes too with their ocean/sea salts for their salt water fish.

I use Red Sea Salt (it's the only tested brand I've seen available for sale here) and haven't had any problems so far, although I am thinking of using actual sea water in the future. Sea water contains more than just salt - there should be other essential chemicals in sea water that are beneficial to hermit crabs.

If you're meaning to go to the ocean/sea and gathering your own please do be forewarned about the parasites in natural sea/ocean water. If the beach area has any form of heavier boating, this should be taken into consideration too.

Haha, I should have been more specific. I intend to buy the sea water from a pet store that has sterilised it with UV radation.
