Newbie here!

Post by mindytyson3 »

Ok well I went to Panama City Beach Florida this past weekend and decided to get me a Hermit Crab. Well I didn't get them in Panama City but did get them on the way home in Valdost, Georgia from Petsmart. I haven't gotten a real name for my little guy or gal but I just say Hermie as its name for now. So if anyone has an idea of a name that would be great! Thanks.

Also I just found this website and I have learned alot. Well I have a picture of my tank so hopefully this will do just fine for the little one for now. Any advice or tips or anything please let me know. Thanks.

Problem I think

Post by mindytyson3 »

Hello well I got my hermie yesterday. I put him in his new environment last night and he has still not came out or moved around the tank yet. Is there something wrong with him/her? Maybe need to give a couple of days to get use to environment? I am new to hermit crabs not sure even what kind it is.

well thanks.

Welcome to the HCP! Please do read the Crab Care section that is full of info. There is also a search box in the upper right corner of the page that can also pull up a wealth of information.
But it looks as though you do not have a humidity gauge or a thermometer in your tank? (very important instruments addressed in the crab care section)
Looks as though you have only one water source, and are feeding pellet food?
First things first, please do get a humidity gauge & thermometer. Also get an ocean water source specifically for salt water fish tanks. This will help your little one hopefully for a little spell until you can read the Crab Care section.

i have a digital thermometer that i have had in it all day long. the temp stayed between 72 and 75 degrees. is this ok? i am going to get me a humidity gauge. do you know if walmart carries anything for hermit crabs? thats the only place close to me that we have with animal supplies but not sure if they carry anything for hermit crabs or not. i guess i need to go tomorrow and look and see. ok i will get something else for water/salt. what salt do i use to put in the water? how much do i need to put in there with the water? whats an ocean water source? sorry i feel stupid but gotta ask. never had a hermit crab before so gotta ask questions to learn. ok thanks so much for the information.

WalMart only sells API salt for fish which is a freshwater salt, not an ocean/sea salt. Do you have a PetSmart near you or a store that sells salt water fish?
http://crabbywiki.com/tiki-index.php?pa ... ater+Mixes
Along with an ocean/sea pond, hermies do need a dechlorinated fresh water pond offered as well.
WalMart does sell digital humidity and ther combo sets. They should be where the outdoor thermometers and such are kept. They are small, about 2 inch by 2 inch and will work. While there you may wish to also pick up a thermometer with a probe end to it to check substrate temp. (there was just a discussion within the last couple days where I provided links to the pictures of the ones at Target that WalMart also carries.
For food, good start is:
http://crabbywiki.com/tiki-index.php?pa ... ab+meat%3F
and
http://www.hermitcrabcuisine.com/

Please do not be fooled and think things need to be for 'hermies', because majority of items with those long beautiful eye stalks, and adorable antenna actually are not good for hermies and are VERY misleading! Hermies do need shells, but the painted ones, fancy ones also are not good for them, they should have natural shells.
For plastic vines and such for decorations... dollar stores work too.
By asking questions is how we all learn, and we were all new at one time too and full of questions. Some (like myself) still have questions about certain things!

I only have a Walmart around me. The nearest Petsmart is an hour away.
I have a dechlorinated pond in there but need to get the sea salt one set up. I am going to Walmart tomorrow and see what they have. I have found in different cities that Walmarts actually have different stuff than my Walmart has. I have a digital thermometer already so I will just get the humidity one by itself. Ok thanks so much for the information!

The combo unit is about 7-8 dollars at WalMart. Please do look at the link for ocean/sea salt and only purchase one of those that are specifically sold for salt water fish.

Well I have saved these websites! Thanks so much for your help! Well I have bad news, my little Hermie was dead this morning when I got up. I am not sure why. I did notice that when I got him he wasn't very active and hasn't been since I got him. He always stayed in his shell. He never moved or anything! Maybe I need to find some that is active and get one of those and see what happens. Maybe the one I got wasn't very healthy. I am not sure but I am sad and now I am not sure where to get one at around here where I live. Well thanks again!

welcome! and sorry about your loss :( now about your crab... when you get another (if you do) then make sure to get at least two if do not know already they are pretty social. do not worry too muc after they get settled after that, they seem to be fine, I've had my current ones for years and so far none have died ;)
I love my five hermies:
Bumper, the socialite leader
Sticky, The Devourer
Shy Guy, Name says all.
Rose, hyper, never sleeps
Sharky, micro version of ShyGuy
Celebrating 5 years of Crabisism XD

Thanks! Yeah I went to Griffin, GA today and the truck was running behind so my husband will go back tomorrow and see if they finally got them in or not if not I will go back on Friday and see. Will one not do? I know they are social but do I have to get 2? If its better to get 2 then I will see if my husband will get 2 for me. Well thanks.
