Re: 55 Gallon Crabitat
Well, the general rule is a gallon a crab at the least, so I'd say 50 at most, but that might be a little crowded. I would put maybe 30-25 in there so I could put a lot of toys.

The 1-2 hermie per gallon myth went out a few years ago. Please read:

Re: 55 Gallon Crabitat
I have 18 in my 55g - They are varied sizes, but 10 of them are small or smaller medium size.
They have a lot of room to climb, dig, eat, swim and play - I am considering a few more, but based on my setup I really think more than 3 or 4 more, keeping the new ones smaller, would be unfair to my guys and gals. I lose a lot of room for a second level because my substrate has to be deep enough in places to accommodate my big guys and one end of my tank is set up to be a salt water "beach" so a second level over that makes me nervous as they would be falling onto gravel or very shallow substrate.
I don't think there can be any set rule for how many crabs you can fit in a certain size tank as there are too many variables - I think the best way to deal with it is to start with fewer crabs and add on over time.

Re: 55 Gallon Crabitat
Thanks guys! Here's a picture of my crabitat:
I hope I uploaded them correctly! I currently have 4 large PPs (Goliath, Andre, Rambo and Tiny), 6 small ecuadorians, and 6 small to medium PPs. They have plenty of room to roam around and my substrate is pretty thick - 8 inches on one end...might need to make it 10 - 12 for my big ones!!!

Go to the gallery and click the link "Upload Files"
It will have directions there. Make sure your pictures are not larger than 1024k

Re: 55 Gallon Crabitat
Thanks for letting me know how and where to post my picture. My picture is in the April 2009 Gallery under Joan's 55 Gallon Crabitat. I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on it. My water dishes (both sale and clean) are in the middle of the crabitat, along with three food dishes scattered throughout (dry, fresh, and dirt/herbs).
