I had the same reaction the other day with a piece of driftwood that got salt water spray on it as well, CrabbyJo! I freaked out...but when I took a closer look at it, the supposed "mold" was sparkly, and it was hard but crumbled at the touch...definitely not mold!

You could try wetting the white stuff to see if it dissolves. If it dissolves, then it's salt. I get white powdery mould on my mopani wood, so I have to check it occasionally.
