The Matters of Moss

Post by Foxydiva3 »

The Matters Of Moss, I have just set my crabitat up, It has lots of sand Lots of climbing And hemp net levels. I also put A moss pit in Via corner soap dish. My crabs love this pit . My Humididty And Temp is Perfect so want to continue having the pit. My Question is. After 4 days The Pit has started to grow some strnds of what I Am supposing is mold. Is this 1. normal, 2. do they eat it or like it , 3 Will it spred to the rest of my tank. What is the norm to replace moss and is there a way to prevent the mold from growing. I soaked my Hemp nets and Hammocks In salt water And Wondered if you also could do this with moss and if that would work.
Thanks All

I have moss pits and it helps the humidity and the crabs enjoy grazing in it. They also sleeps and eat the moss which acts as a water source.

I have never seen mold, you may just be seeing moss and think its mold. I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't have moss in my crab tank, but I have moss in my gecko tank that has the same humidity. I've never seen it mold, and Ive had the same moss for like 3 months. :P

Any time food is dragged into a substrate of any kind there is a high potential for mold. But there are times too that hermies can get the oils/juices from the foods they eat on their shells as well. Many crabbers do soak their moss in ocean water which seems to help deter mold from growing. (It does still need to be checked though) And one really doesn't want mold within their tanks.

Toss out the old moss. With some new moss soak in salt water and then microwave it for 1-2 minutes. Once it cools down add it to your moss pit. I've never had mold in any of the moss pits I've used.

I just thought I'd share this with you: If you blend out door moss with buttermilk, and pour the mixture over where you want the moss to grow, it grows! But be careful I'm not sure if it's safe for hermit crabs, and i havnt tried it yet.

Zeke is burying himself in the moist moss! Can they molt in this? When it dries out should I spray it?

They can molt in it. Spray it to keep it moist, or you can take it out and re-soak it.
