I like the set up however, I have a hard time seeing which are new posts and which are not. I have to look for the dates on them.

I just checked the proglass package for the icons, and yes, they look VERY similar.

Can the colors be changed for when you post a new topic? This one they are red.

Yeah, I just have to replace the default image for that. For proglass, instead of new topics having a slight paler blue icon, should I use red to contrast?

After receiving feedback from numerous people in regards to recolouring our whole site, would sticking to blue be a safer choice than purple? I love purple, but would blue distinguish us from other hermit crab sites? Would you say blue is more of a "paradise" colour than purple?

I think blue is more like the ocean and paradise yes.

that's one of my problems too, you can't see new posts. i just click whatever i remember replying to before lol. i like the steel blue thing you got going now, wai. btw, why isn't anyone else responding to this forum? it's just us 3
