Are Aussie hermits supposed to be nocturnal?

Post by appps »

Know the other species are suposably nocturnal but are Aussies also supposed to be? I don't get that as mine are out and really active during the day.

I even paid particular attention today and to be honest as we approach 7pm this is the quietest they've been all day. All 4 spent midday roaming, climbing, digging and swimming. They were all over the place most of the afternoon.

Now it's dusk and two I can't even find and the other two are just sitting there in their favorite hidey holes.

Are mine the only Aussies not terribly nocturnal? Or is this species supposed to be out and about in the daytime?

I don't think any of the species are nocturnal. I don't even know if they actually sleep, but they have random resting periods.

I keep reading questions along the lines of when will I see them if they only come out at night and was sure I'd read references to being nocturnal?

Mind you after I wrote that I was up late and they banged and crashed to all hours so defiantly active at night too.

Interesting point about the not sleeping. Wonder if that's why they burrow under sometimes for no apparent reason. To get a little shut eye :-)

I have 5 species of hermies here, (no Aussies) and I cannot say any of them are nocturnal. I see a couple different species up throughout the day scooting about. More PP's than the others, but that is only because that is what we have the most of.
In the wild they are not even nocturnal, but do stay in the shade or burrowed due to the heat of the sun. But on rainy days they are seen scooting about then too.
