Play sand and Coir peat brick?
Hi All....I was just looking at ihavecrabs.com.au and they have Bunnings 9L Coir Power Coir - Peat Bricks for sale(half the price at Bunnings), well i would assume it is crab safe then if its on that website(a few members have mentioned it on here)....Has anyone used this or heard of other crabbers using it? Also i was thinking about getting the Richgro 20kg Play Sand from Bunnings which is only $7.75 compared to the $25 5kg bag reptile quarts sand i get from Petstock(which is chunkier than their beach sand would be)...The play sand says its been carefully screened and washed and is safe for children so im pretty sure this would be ok, i have heard many people talk about play sand in their crabitats....Would these two items be good to use? Has anyone has problems with pests hatching from the Coir?

Coconut fiber = safe! I seen a lot of people use it without problems, same with the sand. So they should be fine! Just once added, post a lot of pictures.

I would just double check the back of the coir brick as I have seen some of those before and decided not to buy it because of some additives to add extra expansion... No idea what they were, so assumed un-crab safe. The richgro play sand is great - it was recommended to me by appps, and I found that it actually has some very small bits of shell in it - good calcium!

Hi Ginger i got the same coir peat brick the ihavecrabs.com.au website sells...I haven't used it yet and will look at the pack more thoroughly before opening it...Thats great news about the play sand cant wait to clean out the tank and put it in as its more like their natural habitat unlike the rougher sand i have now...

I took photos of the coir brick i got seems like it would be safe but does have a warning for humans to not breath in or handle without gloves due to micro-organisms

I think they put that on anything like that these days as you can get Legionaries disease from packaged dirt or potting mix etc.
Just open and don't breath it in and let air for a bit before using.

Yup, I'm agreeing with apps on this. It should be fine to use.
