Well does anyone here use sponges? I don't. I don't see my crabs drink from them. If my crabs want to clean themselves or replenish their shell water, they can't cause a big sponge is in the way. I also know that sponges are a breeding land for bacteria.
Anyone use sponges?

Re: Sponges, my opinion and need advice.
I don't but some people (I have read) put a soap dish in the top of their tank and put a wet sponge on it to help with humidity if they are having a humidity problem. I did have a small sponge in the water dish before but I took it out they never used it and my humidity was way to high. So if you are having humidity problems then I would use one even if it is in a soap dish by the top of the tank otherwise I don't see a reason to use one. I also have that playground thingy with sponges all over it and they play on that. I wanted to put it in the tank on the wall but I thought it would bring the humidity too high again so I will keep it out for play time.

I have seen your sponge playground, very clever!
I have no problems with humidity, unless my heat lamp is on all day, which it is. But even then I can manage.

Thanks, I wouldn't worry about using sponges then but who knows I can be wrong, anyone else want to chime in?

I read that in the wild, hermit crabs usually suck moisture off of leaves and bark. Not true. Hermit crabs replenish their shell water and bathe themselves alot. They have been used to drink from puddles. In captivity, hermit crabs don't know what sponges are and may see them as predators

Re: Sponges, my opinion and need advice.
They actually eat the sponges, which is why you need to have sea sponges and not kitchen sponges.
Sponges are just to help humidity. As the sponge soaks up the water, it evaporates faster into the air.
I use to have a sponge in my tank just for them to play with and eat. I recently took it out because I put in a piece of lava rock.

yea...sponges are weird. Are the Crabworx drinking sponges all natural? I don't trust them. If not, were can I get some sea sponges for rare occasions?

Re: Sponges, my opinion and need advice.
I did notice them eatting the sponges on their playground I knew it was safe for them to do. I don't want sponges in the tank though because I have to sometimes open the tank lid to let some of the humidity out. I have a plexi glass lid that I drilled 1/2" holes in the top and it has tons of holes drilled already and if it is really hot outside it gets pretty humid in the house and the temp and humidity get way to high so I have to remove the lid. I won't recommend that if you are not home but I am home all day so I can do that.

Yea...I have a screen lid That I cover half with a wet towel. Then I have my heat lamp on it, if you have a glass lid, can heat from heat lamps still get in?

Re: Sponges, my opinion and need advice.
I have a heater stuck to the side of my tank on the highest part of the sand so it is cooler on the food and water side and warmer on the hermi hut part with the soap dish.
