SHRIMP IS A HIT!

Post by erikleeson »

I think everybody knows, but shrimp is a favourite among hermit crabs. :D
I was cooking some shrimp for my penne alfredo, and I decided to give the crabs a tail. I swear, I put it in and Gilbert started eating it in minutes.

It was just frozen shrimp, then thawed and cooked without any spices or anything. Gilbert LOVES it. As I'm typing this he's eating it. He's been eating it for about half an hour. Shrimp tails are the shrimps exo so it is a very good calcium source. I also noticed that Gilbert eats his shrimp with his large claw, rather than his small one. :S

I'm sure my other crabs and your crabs will love shrimp. Good source of protein and calcium, both very important in a crabs diet. And best of all, the crabs love it!

I actually got a picture of Gilbert eating the tail. (!)
So If you want too see your crab eat, DEFINITELY try shrimp!

That so funny you say this, I had some frozen shrimp in my freezer and I cut it up and put it in a shell with some honey drizzled over it and they love it. I didn't think of doing the tail, I will for sure in the morning.

Some stores sell pre-cooked shrimp. If you buy uncooked, you can boil some dechlorinated water, add as many shrimp as you'd like and cook until pink and firm. It's maybe 5-8 minutes.

Well I gave them the shrimp, well only Kermi since the other 2 are under the sand and there are not signs that any of them have come up. Anyways, Kermi loves it she ate the whole tail and some of the shrimp, I found she liked the tail the best. So maybe keep a few pieces for the crabs (especially if you only have a few crabs like I do) and eat the rest saving the tails for your crabs. I don't eat shrimp so I have a whole bag for them and I am sure some will go to waste, I will make sure I don't unfreeze all of them next time. I think a few at a time for me next time. Just make sure you surface clean the next morning so you don't get any mold on the food that is left in the sand by the crabs. So the shrimp is a hit for me too. Hopefully Soupy will come up soon and see what he is missing.

What I did, was I took just plain frozen grocery store for human consumption shrimp, I thawed it out and fried it. I don't like to eat shrimp tails, so I gave them to the hermies. The tail is usually referred to as the exo skeleton of a shrimp, as in usually shrimp's exo skeleton is removed except the tail, and we humans usually remove the tails yourself because we're interested in the meat, not the exo. The crabs like both so try it out!

My crabs like baby pink shrimp, freeze dried shrimp, shrimp cooked in extra virgin olive oil. Pretty much any kind of shrimp lol. We buy a container of it and my cats like it so when the hermies get shrimp the kitties get some shrimp.

Today my mom brought home bay scallops. they're the perfect size for hermies! If you guys find some they are definitely worth trying. The fish guy at the supermarket usually doesn't charge us for them because we only want a few at a time. He now knows my mom as the crab lady lol
