I know this is a very late reply, but perhaps it might be helpful to someone. Sometimes I will dunk a piece of fruit into saltwater before placing it in the tank. Mold doesn't like salt, so it may buy you an extra day or so before you see mold.
Interestingly, I had a piece of fruit leather in the tank and no one wanted it at all until it molded and then they devoured it. I always wet my substrate with saltwater so I don't worry excessively if the food molds a little bit, but you shouldn't let it get out of hand.

Is mold due to high humidity?
Hey guys, sorry to ask another question but I am trying to be a pro at this whole crabbing thing
I came home this afternoon and came to realise that my crab Vinnie has passed away
I have been doing everything right, so I did a bit of an "autopsy" and found out that he had some green stuff on the side of his body>mold. I checked around the tank for it, and I found some on the back of my tank. It is only a new tank and wasn't cleaned that long ago, how could this be? I hardly spray it in there, I only spray when the humidity is REALLY low! Usually my humidity is around 75% but lately it has been really cold (In Melbourne) raining, windy name it we have it! So actually at the moment it is 48%... I can't help it, all I can do is put more water in the rock pool and give it a bit of a spray
What do you use to get rid of it? I know that you can't use any chemicals so will just warm water do?
How do I stop it from coming back or help to prevent it from coming back?
Is green on a hermit crab mold?
Is it a good idea to put some mesh or something like that for the "lid" instead of glass panels, so the air can flow?
***No, I am not killing my crabs on purpose, I have just had a lot of deaths, oh well, live & learn***

Re: food keeps going mouldy
The green you found, was/is it 'fuzzy/furry'? If not, chances are it was algae that you saw. This does happen even within a hermies shell due to stagnant water and sometimes the oils from foods. (why even for those who do not bath their hermies, to bath them periodically should be done)
What type of ocean water mix are you using?
To clean a tank if one does need something stronger than hot water to cut on grime/build up, a white distilled vinegar can be used, but the tank will need rinsed until all the vinegar odor is gone.

Re: food keeps going mouldy
I've got some dark green gunk attached to parts of my cholla log. However, it's not furry, but just appears in the form of patches. Would sand-paper scrape that stuff off? I haven't noticed any mould on my mopani wood though. The mould I get in the tank is usually white and furry.ladybug15057 wrote:The green you found, was/is it 'fuzzy/furry'? Sand paper might work, but you could also try a knife and whittle it off. A good scrubbing and a baking should also help to kill the algae.
