Dechlorinating water

Post by Wai »

I'm going away on holiday this summer, and I got my neighbour to look after my hermies. She's never had hermit crabs before, and I had to write out a care sheet for her. I couldn't go into deep detail at all, just things like when to change the water and food. But my problem is dechlorinating the water. StressCoat dechlorinates tap water doesn't it? I've heard that you should never add any StressCoat to the hermies' drinking water, but then how to I dechlorinate it? Normally I'd boil the tap water and let it cool to dechlorinate, but I have to leave my hermies in my house while she comes over (we've given her the keys). So she wouldn't boil the water. What can I do? Already mum has screamed at me thousands of times "Just use tap water!"

I've already tried being as brief as I can with the care sheet, and mum is already complaining that it's too long. It's only two pages. "Who can be bothered looking after them if your care sheets are too long?" Well, I used big writing so she could read it easier, and I haven't gone through anything about molting. Only stuff about the water and food. And blah blah blah mum complains :@

So how should I dechlorinate the water then???

Hi Wai
You could boil the water, let it cool then store in a cleaned bottle, or in a bucket with lid or even pop some plastic wrap over the bucket to stop any dust etc. getting in, or you could buy some distilled water from your local supermarket, I know coles and safeway have cheap 1, 2 and 4 litre bottles then you could keep them next to the crabitat at room temp all ready to be used :)
Any more questions and let me know, Im full of ideas on this subject, lol.
bye for now,
Kellie :)

Good Thinking :)
I forgot to mention to stay away from adding stress coat to the hermies drinking water, it is a dechlorinator but not recommended for their daily drinking and bathing needs.
You dont even need to spend the extra to get the mount franklin the store brand is just as good, actually the same and much cheaper!
glad I could help,
Kellie :)

Spring water is good for hermies, but distilled water lacks minerals that are vital for growth and life of nearly all living beings. Another cheap option is to pour tap water into a bucket, jar, water jug, whatever and leave it open for 24 hours or more. The chlorine will evaporate during this time (mostly) and make for safe use for your crabs without being a big bother.

Dissled water lacks in nutrients. Bottled spring water is good, I use that. If you declor the tap water instead of using bottled, make sure it does not have a slime coating

I've heard NOT to put stress coat in the drinking water, just in when bathing...
I have 3 1 gallon water bottle that i fill with de-chlorinanted water so i refill them every week is all.
