Too small shell and hes not moulting!!

Post by rmbrmb »

I bought a painted shell hermie at the mall. Hes outgrowing his shell. He can't even go all the way in it. I have plenty of NATURAL shells laid out for him but he won't molt!! I'm afraid he might die soon. I hope little Splash isn't stuck.

Changing shells and actually molting (shedding the old outside exo) are 2 different things. Sometimes due to the trauma a hermie goes through to move out of their natural shells into the awful painted/fancy shells is a lot for them to handle and takes them quite awhile before they move into another shell.

Inactive crab

Post by rmbrmb »

Snapper and Splash are very inactive. Splash sits in the cocohut all the time. His shell is WAY to small and he cant go all the way in it. This shell is a horrid painted shell ( I hope he isn't stuck) Snapper recently changed shells he dose nothing durring the day at all! But at night he digs up a storm. I have never been through a molt and I dont know want to look for. I heard of many crabs getting inactive and dying. I am hoping that isn't the case. :|

rmbrmb - what is the humidity in the tank? I have noticed that when the humidity drops in my tank (I live in a VERY dry climate) my crabs become pretty inactive.
6 hermit crabs - 3 PPs and 3 Equadorians

I am happy to hear he has moved out of the painted shell. However:

It is important to answer the questions. (so please finish them) And BTW, a fluctuation of 60-80% is too much of a fluctuation for the hermies to breath properly. (especially if the gauge has been calibrated/tested and is reading correctly)
