what about just useing salt the the container says contains no iodine?

The problem about using just normal "table salt" without the iodine is that hermit crabs need more than just NaCl, the element composing table salt. Ocean water has much more in it than just NaCl, and your crabs need those other elements as well. That is why you should use a brand like Instant Ocean that creates ocean water, not just salt water.

Another note as well is your table salts also have anti caking agents used within them, unlike the ocean/sea mixes sold for salt water fish tanks.

Maybe not immediately, but it wouldn't be healthy for them at any rate.
