well there is no possible way that my hermitCRABS could get out un less they jumped really high!!!!

You're wrong pookie unless you have a plastic critter keeper. (but then you would have a useless lid with slits all the way throughout it.)
But all sized hermies are quite capable of climbing the silicone on the corners of the inside of the aquariums. I personally have witnessed my Jumbos as well as my straws climbing the silicone. (as well as our smaller hermies) As hard as it is to believe they are capable of getting ahold of that silicone as well as the tips of their legs in the itty bitty space between the silicone and glass to climb. So there is no need for them to have to be able to jump at all.
And as Hermie's rule pointed out a lid is needed to help to hold humidity within the tank. It is impossible to hold proper humidity levels within the tank without some type of a solid lid. (always opened at least a slit for fresh air) There maybe times the humidity needs lowered so one opens the lid to let it escape, but nonetheless a lid is needed.
