May I ask where it is written no long term effects have been noted? I am aware of a blog entry she had done regarding snails, but read nothing about any long term effects?

Re: help, is this food ok?!?!?
I've fed them the snails, caterpillars and crickets from the cans. It's been over a year and nothing devastating has happened.Mr.Crab wrote:http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?sku=1050966
I'm about to buy it pretty soon, and was wondoring if it was fine the crabs, I read a review on the site if you scroll down and this is what he/she says:
"This is an excellent food product for hermit crabs. Your hermit crabs need the protein and the oils in shrimp - they will thank you for it! It is also very convenient - it keeps in the refrigerator almost for forever! Since hermit crabs are scavengers they still enjoy the shrimp very much even after it has been in the fridge for weeks! Just place one shrimp per crab on a food dish in late afternoon and remove leftovers each morning."
is that true and is it fine for the crabs to eat? answer quickk! plz

I've been avoiding canned foods like that since I read about metal leaching, but now that I hear Vicki has used them with no problems I think I'll go try that. It will be a great way to provide some nice fresh moist foods instead of just the same rehydrated fare they're used to (the family never gets fresh food).
I have 13 hermies, and 30-something pets in all (it varies).

Re: help, is this food ok?!?!?
Ok so today I was at Petsmart and getting a background for my tank and went to the freezer section by the fist dept and got a 30 cube of Brine Shrimp and Spirulina Algae. It has Crude Protein 4.0%, Crude Fat .4%, Crude Fiber .4% and Mositure 92%. Now I put it in the tank and as soon as it defrosted Kermi must have smelled it and went running to the food dish. She has been eatting for the last 15 minutes and is still by the dish when I came down to tell everyone about it. I have never seen her eat so much. Orangy and Soupy are under ground for now but I am sure when they come up tonight they will smell it and eat it like crazy too. I am sure it will be gone by the morning. I wanted to let everyone know. It was $4.50 for 30 cubes and if you have 4 or less crabs you can probably cut a cube in 1/2 and make 60 cubes. I am very excited to see Kermi eatting so much. The last time she has ate that fast and much was when I first brought her home probably because she was starving.

I've used the foods in the freezer section too of Petco and our hermies do seem to enjoy them quite well, and they aren't really expensive either. Nice being able to keep them frozen too until one is ready to use them.

Re: help, is this food ok?!?!?
So today I was at petsmart and bought the blood worms, I gave them to them tonight so I will see if I notice any gone in the morning. Hope they like them. I really like giving them these cubes as they are easy. I also offer other stuff but I really like giving these as they are easy and cheap 30 cubes you can cut if you only have a few crabs for $5. I am going to cut in 1/2 later on because they don't seem to eat as much and they will last me longer. I am just going to put them in a freezer bag after I cut them.

Re: help, is this food ok?!?!?
I have some in my freezer right now! I often have trouble getting my crabs to eat their spirulina, so hopefully having something tasty like bloodworms mixed in will help. I haven't seen any eating it yet, but I've only served it twice.

I bought the dried bloodworms. The crabs weren't all that interested in them dry, but when I put them and a bit of a dried green bean into a shell with some salt water and microwaved it to make bloodworm-green bean soup, they were all over it! (Well, judging from the amount of sand tracked into the shell, I assume so)

My crabs won't eat anything dried except apples and coconut, I rehydrate everything and they eat it. They tend to go for the smelly stuff though so I try to give them something smelly daily. The humidity also rehydrates some stuff for me too.
