Drinking water and saltwater question

Post by Titans »

Hello,

I have a saltwater aquarium and was wondering if hermit crabs require the same parameters as in salinity, ph...Also can we use bottled drinking water to mist and feed the hermits?

In your crabitat, you need both SALT WATER and DRINKING WATER. 2 bowls of water. U need to buy the conditioners for both of them which is available at your pet stores by the maker 'ZooMed' its very easy to set up the water. DO NOT use regular water hermit crabs do not like that. the water needs to be cleaned from all impurities and u need to condition it so your hermies like the water, regular water WONT work.

Also, for misting, you can use the drinking water conditioner and you need to get a spraying bottle to mist. Make sure you have a temp. and humidity gauge available so you know the optimum levels. Read other threads for the optimum humidity and temp. levels.

Hope that helps,

It's not that hermit crabs don't like tap water, but conditioner is needed to remove the harmful chemicals dissolved in the tap water.

The salt water for your fish should be fine for the crabs. I use real ocean water for mine and bottled water for them as well.

Ya, Wai, I didn't really mean they wouldn't like the taste, I was just saying in general it wouldn't be good for em. :)

Do you have to use conditioner on bottled drinking water or is it already free of chlorine and other harmful products to hermits?

Yes. You need to a dechlorinator for hermies for drinking water. Zoomed is a good brand. It takes out chlorine and other harmful things in the water.

All water except for bottled distilled (pure in Aus.) water needs to have a dechlorinator used in it that removes chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals from it. ZooMed part one does not remove heavy metals from tap water, and neither does the ZooMed part 2. Neither the ZooMed Part 2, or the HBH salt water mix even show any salinity level if and when mixed per their instructions. Hermies should be offered an ocean water pond with the salinity level of 1.021-1.024.
