crab is naked!!

Post by jenblueeyes »

Please HELP! I bought my kids 2 hermit crabs several months ago. We love watching them and have being doing great. We just looked in at them a few minutes ago and noticed one is out of his shell. I immediately took him out and now have him in a container. I know they are very delicate without their shell. I have put several shells in the container as well as its original. He/she is just crawling all over the place. What is going on and what should I do? Experts please assist!! Thank you!!!

Hello,

How big is your container? If it's tighter he may be tempted to get in a shell. Put the crab and the container in a warm dark place with a humidity level of between 75% and 80%.

Wash out his old shell to check if there is anything inside that may be prickling him. Make sure the water has been dechlorinated before doing so.

Sounds like you're doing all you can. Wai offered good advice. The only thing I can add is to leave him to his own devices (after iso, extra shells, etc). One of mine went buff once. She just abandoned her shell for no reason one day. So I put her in iso w/ several shells, and she plopped her little self right into one. No problems since. Good luck to you!
