cuttlebone

Post by beledi »

Not sure where to put this, but I had an aha moment this morning when I was trying to powder cuttlebone, without a mortar and pestle, beating with a hammmer: You get the picture. I decided to use a potato peeler. It really works well. :o

I usually crush mine with a mortar and pestle. I'll have to try the potato peeler thing. thanks! :)

uh oh. The potato peeler is metal. Is it safe to use with the cuttlebone? Also is it safe to feed sardines, etc., since they are in a can?

As long as there is no rust on it, it's okay.
Metal only is a problem if it has a chance to rust. Metal does not leach into food unless you are using a metal food bowl.

I believe that the risk is minimal since the food is only coming in contact with the metal peeler for a short time. If the blade is stainless steel rather than aluminum, so much the better.
I don't like feeding canned foods, but think it is acceptable once in a while--especially if the food is not available in any other form. Kinda hard to get fresh sardines...but you have to remember the added salt and stuff that is in canned goods too.
