smothies
Is it a good idea to blend all of Gary's different food together into like a smoothie, and give it to him that way?

Re: smothies
I Like it, make sure to blend with dechlorinated room temperature water. Also, Don't make it to liquidy.
I'm going to try it!

Re: smothies
That sounds nice. This might be a recipe for the future:
-1/4 of a small carrot
-A little piece of orange
-Grapes
-More Fruits/Greens.
-Blend it. Then serve with some sprinkled cuttlebone.
You need to make it a gloopy substance. if its liquid, it will fall everywhere.

Re: smothies
Yea, I agree. Also, shouldn't the glop be served warm and not cold if possible? I hear hermit crabs prefer warm foods, if you have a heat light the glop will heat up and maybe melt.

Re: smothies
Yesterday I GOT A NEW HERMIE! I got him from the local petco in Medway, MA. His shell didnt fit at all, you could see all of his legs, and i hope he'll change shells soon like patty did when i got her. I named him Gillbert because i thought it was a cute name. I made sure that i bought a smaller crab(about medium), so that him and my big crab, Patty dont get in shell fights. He is very active and Gillbert and Patty are getting along fine (Patty is the alpa crab.)

Re: smothies
However, if the food is warm and your crabitat is under 80% humidity, the food will quickly be infested with harmful bacteria that will try to decompose the food since the environment is ideal for their survival. I've only tried hand-feeding warm treats, but I never leave any warm food in the dish unattended. Or, you can put some warm food in the dish and watch your hermit crab eating it, then after he/she scuttles away, you can remove the food.erikleeson wrote:Yea, I agree. Re: smothies
There's nothing wrong with mixing all of the foods together as long as you won't be breaking any harmful seeds up (like cherry pits or something). Adding liquid is fine. But it is important for crabs to be able to pick and choose parts of their food that they need more of at a certain time. A lot of folks put separate dishes in the tank, one for meats and nuts, another for fresh fruits and vegetables, etc. That way, every bite doesn't have to contain the same nutrients. Am I making sense here? I can't quite get the thoughts from my head down in writing just now.

Re: smothies
I agree, however I don't think extra dishes are necessary. I just use one big dish (although it was labeled small) and have some cheerios, some shrimp, and some carrots or whatever. Then the crabs can eat what they want, but they still have one dish, but I guess theres no point in arguing with the chef over food

Re: smothies
the CHEF loves arguing almost as much as she likes food! (and I'm almost as good at it too!) But separate dishes are unnecessary, I've got to give you that. I often pile 3 tiny mounds of 3 different foods into one small clamshell "dish" and let them mix it or eat from each separately.
