You'll have to ask a land hermit crab scientist (if they are any out there). They aren't mammals, so it will be difficult for us to tell if they're undergoing an allergic reaction.

I'm not sure that I've ever heard of a crab being allergic to anything. They need to be kept away from exposure to metal and chemicals. They should not be around deoderant aerosols, candles, potpourri, incense, smoke, household cleansers, etc. because of the chemicals. Is that what you mean?

That helps a lot. I was talking about food like some of us are alergic to peanuts like my friend.

Oh, I thought that your crab might be doing something weird that you thought was like sneezing or something.

Since I have my crabs in my bedroom with me I tend to go out into the hall or my sisters room to put on perfume, unless its an oil., and hairspray. Since I read your posts is it still okay to light a candle in my room every now and then? I've done it before and nothing happened with the hermies. They were also on the other side of the room. Should I still do this?

What I worry about most with candles is the fragrances because some of them use oils like cinnamon and cloves that are highly irritant to invertebrates. Occasionaly use of candles probably isn't going to pose a serious threat, but it is something to be mindful of. Some peoples homes are permeated with airfresheners, incense, etc. and that wouldn't be an ideal home for any pet. A friend of mine had a candle party and as the hostess she earned all sorts of candles and scented items from the sales of her guests. After filling up her home with all these goodies, she found that she could no longer get out of bed because of having constant migraine headaches. Her small son's asthma was worse than ever. Her doctor discovered the connection to the new super-scented environment. She gathered up everything, put them in a box in the garage, and all of their symptoms went away.

I wouldn't take the risk. How far is the tank?.. It doesn't matter. the fragrences move throughought the room. thats what a candle is supposed to do.

It's on the opposite side of the room. It's only once in a while. I'm not home long enough to enjoy candles burning.
