Artificial preservatives and anything you can't pronounce are usually bad for hermit crabs.

FMR Land Hermit Crab food has Copper Sulphate which is a deadly preservative that can seriously harm hermit crabs if exposed long enough to it. Through my experience, my crabs simply don't like it. They ate it for about 2 minutes, then stopped. I even tried an experiment where I had the FMR food and they where eating it then I put a slice of pear in and they dumped the FMR and went for the pear. Of course this is just common sense, its like choosing french fries over salad.

Hermit crabs will thank you a million times more if you feed them natural foods. Its pretty easy to find food for them to eat, most of it you just "share" with the crabs. Eating a peach? Give a small percentage to the crabs. Making up a salad? Give a small percentage to the crabs. Eating crackers? You guessed it, give a small percentage to the crabs. And if you eat pizza pops and potato chips and rarely hold a fruit, look in your kitchen. Apple, pear, orange, banana, strawberry, kiwi, peach, nectarine, plum, blueberries, grapes, dates, raisins, plums, plain cheerios, unsalted nuts, potato, yams, broccoli, tomato, celery, cucumber, carrots, beans, peppers, egg white, egg yolk and egg shells can all be fed to the crabs and are all found in the common kitchen. They get all their nutrients from a varied diet. You can also mix up some protein rich foods (banana, nuts, egg..no meats they rot.) Calcium rich foods (cuttlebone, egg shells) Carotene rich foods (carrots, corn, sweet potato) and basic taste (strawberry, apple, pear, coconut, papaya..) and grind it all up in a blender and dehydrate it and you have a nutrient full day to day mix that your crabs will enjoy. I made one up of cuttlebone, egg yolk, egg shells, dried grapes, dried sweet potato, dried coconut, unsalted walnuts and brazil nuts and I serve them it every 2 weeks so they get the nutrients they need and don't get bored as it isn't served everyday.

Check out the Epicurean Hermit for safe and unsafe foods for them to eat. They will love you more and its fun to see what they like and what they don't like and you will contribute to the crabbing world. I like to experiment with strange foods like sea weed, decaying bark, leaves, fig, and guava.

Good luck!
