My food creation...

Post by Chermo »

I was looking in the fridge today and figured I would make some scrambled eggs for my crabs with the shell. So I was looking in the cabinets and found other stuff to add to it. Here is my creation...

Scrambled eggs with 1/2 of the shell crumbled in it
Dried coconut
Raw pork cut into small pieces
Smashed banana (it was a browning banana so it smashed easily)
Cuttle Bone broken up into it

I am not sure how they like it yet but it sounded good to put all that in there. Soupy is the only one up right now but she has been hiding in the cocohut all day. Now that I turned on the night glo light I hope to see if she likes it. I will let everyone know. I basically mashed it all together and put a small spoonful of it in the food dish with other stuff and a maple tree leave.

Due to family issues my crabs have been adopted out to wizkidsmom (Cheryl), I know she will care for them like I did. Thanks Cheryl

Great! I feed my crabs a variety of foods at a time, not just one food at a time. Right now I got fresh strawberries and iceberg lettuce with dried sweet potato.

I also feed them other foods besides fruits and vegetables. I feed them rolled oats, plain popcorn, dead insects, maple leaves, rice krispies, cooked pasta, whole wheat toast and unsalted nuts and more as well.

A few times a week I supplement with various meats - raw or cooked, and I often sprinkle large meals with cuttlebone powder.

I mix my foods, I'll usually grab some fresh fruits and veggies, some rice or oatmeal or something, and some dried food and just throw it in the dish. I love feeding the hermies cause you'll never know what they like and dislike.

I noticed my hermies like grapes, blueberries, dead mealworms, maple leaves, plain cheerios and raisins quite a bit. What about you guys?

Did they like it? That sounds like a recipe with lots of calcium. Good food for pre and post molters! We should have a recipe book thread. Yours would be the first in!

Well in that case add the 2 items I forgot to mention.... which are in red
Scrambled eggs with 1/2 of the shell crumbled in it
Dried coconut
Raw pork cut into small pieces
Smashed banana (it was a browning banana so it smashed easily)
Cuttle Bone broken up into it
Millet Seeds (for birds crushed up)
Worm Casings

I also don't know if they liked it yet, I have not seen anyone eat it. I also don't notice any missing when I get up in the morning. I am sure they like it though. Remember 2 are down molting again.

I never see my crabs eat. Right now I have 6 on the surface but I haven't seen them eat much. The best way to tell if they have eaten is to look for sand on the food and footprints in the sand near the dish.

Ashleigh, they most likely are eating, they just eat so little that you don't notice anything missing. Do you offer a large variety of foods every day and always have different foods each day?

That diet isn't quite adequate. You should just toss out the hermit crab food immediately, it contains preservatives like ethoxyquin and copper sulfate that will cause bad molts in hermit crabs and may kill them.
Try to feed something the fruit group, the veggie group, the protein group (any unseasoned and unsalted meat you eat they can have too), the cellulose group (barks and wood), and the oils group (olive oil, coconut oil, and fish oil are all good).
Remember, check the ingredients of EVERYTHING you give your hermies for salt or preservatives. If it has any, don't give it to them.

Oh, if you need a jump-start on hermie nutrition I can set up a starter pack of foods from my store and sell it to you. Check out my web site in my signature.
I have 13 hermies, and 30-something pets in all (it varies).
