Molter in corner. Need a good way to seperate

Post by feuerhammer »

Ok I had another thread going on a different board but I now have a different problem. Sebastien, I thought was going to molt he came up and was still acting wierd so I put him in an iso tank. He has been down there since I put him in the iso. But now Felipe has gone down to molt. He is in the corner of the tank. I have a slight view of him. He is in my main tank with Aryton and Kimi. I have a two liter of pop that i am ready to cut apart but am unsure how to do this since Felipe is in the corner. Normally I would leave him alone but he is a little guy and Kimi can be a little aggressive. I am not sure about Aryton since he has only been in the tank a week. He has one heck of a personality. He has been very active. Please help.

RIP Aryton & Mario. I'll miss you.

If he is too close to the corner of the tank you may not be able to use the soda bottle. (one cuts the top and very bottom of the bottle so they can still reach in and fill or change the water caps) It needs to be pushed all the way down in the substrate to the tanks floor with all items moved that the others can climb up and get access to him by.
If there isn't room to push the soda bottle down around him safely, you can use the glass off of a picture frame to section that corner of the tank off. (washed and dried in hot water to remove any cleaners) And again remove all items the others can climb to get access to him by.

If you wash the lids to pop bottles and other plastic lids, it will be fine for your molter. You don't need to provide a pond for him to hang out in, just a way for him to get water until he's strong and hard enough to go back into the whole tank.

Just a note, as well - some crabbers don't use ISO tanks with their molters, especially those with a ton of crabs. They find that by feeding the non-molters properly, the crabs have no desire to go after the newly molted crab or his exo. Calcium, chitin, and protein deficiencies are generally (not always, mind you, but generally) the reasons that crabs go after molters and their exos.

Whereas diet does play a strong roll in cannibalism, there is no guarantee that even with a properly balanced diet it will not happen. For as much as can be known about hermies even molting in the wild, research has shown that there is at least a 5-8% rate of cannibalism that does happen and the percentage does go up when in captivity. Known fact, any surface molters need to be sectioned off or iso'ed for protection from their tank mates.
