Can I use a chlorine neutraliser that "adds electrolytes"?
I purchased a chlorine neutraliser to put in my crabs' drinking water and salt water. I was told by the people at the pet shop this was the one to use, but doing research I realise pet shop staff know nothing and give incredibly incorrect advice. In fact, when I asked if I needed to use a neutraliser they didn't even know what I was talking about, they just said it sounds bout right and I wonder if they were just trying to make a sale! Anyway, after I did my own research I see I do in fact need to use it, I just now need to make sure I have the appropriate stuff. My bottle says Water ager chlorine neutraliser - removes chlorine and choramine from tap water and adds electrolytes. The brand is Aquamaster. Any help would be apprecitated. Thanks!

I'm not sure on this one - hopefully when Marie gets on, she can give you some more info. I will say, though, that it is much easier to buy jugs of purified water that is either distilled or reverse osmosis-purified. That way you don't have to treat the water at all (as long as no minerals have been added to the water since the purification...read the label very well). I have recently made the switch and it is SO much easier than to have to prepare each gallon of water exactly according to the directions and then wait however long before adding the salt mix...I'd recommend using the jugs of water at the store. Also, this can be cheaper than purifying your own water, depending on how much the neutralizer cost you and you know that ALL heavy metals are out of the water, not just the chlorine and chloramines.

Great reply Emma and it is soooo much easier and no guess work when one does buy the pure/distilled bottled waters. But some cannot do this so one does need to make sure they have a dechlorinator as you mentioned that removes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals from the tap water. (but then if the public water company flushes their water lines with chlorine to kill bacteria, one needs to figure out how much conditioner to use. Tap water conditions are made for 'normal' tap water without the overload due to the public water company killing bacteria in the water lines)
But doing a search for "Aquamaster Water ager chlorine neutralizer"
I came up with this:
http://www.petsofoz.com/aquamaster-chlo ... -5050.html
I do see where it neutralizes chlorine, but no mention of chloramine or heavy metals? (not knowing if chloramine is a water problem with Aussie water? but is here in the U.S.)
But this is all I could find, here is everything that was listed doing a Google search:
AquaMaster

Having a look at the tap water analysis in Victoria, our tap water contains chloride and fluoride ions. I only just found out about the fluoride... I might get some distilled water if it isn't too expensive.
I wash my tank and dishes/shells/toys with dechlorinated tap water, but I use bottled water for my hermit crabs' drinking water.
