Dandelion root...

Post by roxanne »

Ive read that dandelion leaf powder or root is beneficial to a hermies diet but the only dandelion root i can find at my local health food store is very hard and looks like coffee grains and hard to crush up at all -.- . Is this type of dandelion root right one or are there others?

What does it say on the ingredients/contents part of the label? Dried dandelion root is pretty hard, and the stuff I get (through the addiction store) is hard and in chunks. It's not as dark as coffee grounds in color and isn't ground at all, just cut into small chunks. If you have dandelions in your yard that you know haven't been chemically treated (herbicide/fertilizer/insecticide) you can even dig those up and give them to the crabs! Don't worry if you can't grind it up - crabs can manage to do it themselves. They don't need to be fed everything in powder form. :)

the cut root is fine, but sometimes it is sold roasted, which is not the ideal way to feed it to crabs. You could soak the root in some hot water to soften it a bit. I try to buy it ground into a fine powder when it is available. Remember too, that you can offer fresh ones dug from a rural area or even your yard if you are certain that no chemical fertilizers and no pesticides have been used. They're not going to be a crab favorite, in my opinion, but a healthy thing to offer for sure! Good for you!

Thankyou, One - theres no ingredients list as it is sold loose from a jar -.- But is meant to be Organic from memory, nearly everything there is that i brought yesterday. . Two - Maybe it is roasted , looking at it that would make sense :P I can only try it with them and see if they will like it... :)

mine never eat their spirulina which is why I developed Kelp Korn. Coating their beloved popcorn was the only way to get them to eat their sea veggies!

I've taken to sprinkling it all over their dried food, along with the astaxanthin powder I have. That way whenever they eat anything else, they're bound to get the goodness of the spirulina and astaxanthin. I make sure that there are some areas that aren't coated in case they really just don't want it, but I try to get some over most of the dried food.
