adding a friend

Post by weber86 »

I have 1 hermie for about a month now, and he seems to be doing pretty well. I would like to add some friends for him, do I just put them all in the tank together, do I have to acquaint them somehow? I expect to get friends of the same size. Your words of wisdom are appreciated!

Put the new crabs in ISO for about a week, then you can put them together.

I was looking at crabs at the kiosk in the Mall and at the pet store. The Mall had a big area with sand and the store had 2-3 inches of water in the bottom of the cage. What stood out to me most, tho, was many of the crabs were extremely active - almost hyer. My little guy does move around but not like he has had too much caffeine! The temp & humidity all match everything I've read...so am I doing something wrong or do the stores do something to the crabs?

as long as their temp, humidity, food, water, etc is prime, i wouldn't worry about him too much. depending on his age and when he molted last he could be preparing to molt. who knows, crabs can be so confusing sometimes! :)

activeness also varies with species/breeds in the crabs. some are more active than others.

all of mine have been PPs. some have been shy, others have been active. the ones i have now are extremely active but i have had some that have been too active and were aggressive toward my mild tempered crabs. that doesn't fly with me, let me tell you. i think it depends on the crabs themselves.

Mine is a PP too - last night he was extremely active and friendly, maybe he has moods like the rest of us. Would you recommend his new friend(s) be PP's too?

i haven't had experience with mixing species. i don't know if it could hurt. i think that as long as they're about the same size and you're not adding a jumbo to your micro, there shouldn't be a problem. but i wouldn't quote me on that, hopefully someone with more experience can help you out.

mxing species doesn't really matter. I think it is Ruggies they can be agressive when first added to a new home---I THINK! I heard that some where, or maybe it was E's?!? Don't follow my info, i don't really know.

But i do know that mxing works. Size usually is okay too if the small crab has a place where it can go and feel safe. I like to stick to similar sizes though!

---also webber, you can stick with PP's is you like. PP's are the hardier of the hermie species. They can stand the 'not so high temps' better than E's or Straw and such, but still better if you have the best temp. and humidity possible. ANYWAYS, E's where hard for me to keep because i like in OH where there is like wacky weasther changes! So PP's are best for me.
