Snake Skin???

Post by MomofFive »

Well, we happen to have some fresh shed snake skin... (Our California King Snake is still growing, a lot)
I know that crabs eat dead animals in nature. Sooooooo......
Could that be recycled into maybe healthy crab dinner???
Any thoughts!?!?

If you don't give the snakes any medications, I don't see why you couldn't try. I poked around on the internet a bit, and the snake shed appears to be made of keratin, the same stuff as our fingernails and hair. If you do offer it, offer it once and wait a few weeks, looking for any odd behaviors or death.

Well, Keratin is a required nutrient for hermit crabs, so why not, since it is a pet snake you've had a while, and you know what it's eaten and what medications, etc. it may have been exposed to.
I'd give it a try... maybe a small piece to start, to see how they do. :)

shed snakeskin is safe to offer. I sometimes find pieces of it when I'm harvesting leaves in the wild and I always save it for the crabs. Also, my sister has a collared dragon (lizard) and she always saves the shed skin pieces for my crabbies.

Also, bug exos are good. Sometimes you can find cicada or grasshopper skins on reeds or branches. Crabs like them pretty well.
