Confused: Moulting or something else

My daughter got two hermies a couple of months ago. Hurry Crab and Scurry Crab. A week later we added Larry. The first few days they were somewhat active, but after that they do nothing. Not very much anyway. They are in a 35 gallon aquarium. Humidity stays high, and temps are good too. My big concern, or I guess frustration is Scurry stays buried in the sand. He is fine, but is always in the sand. We added two more crabs and they are all over the place. They even eat real food. But now Hurry is buried as well. Are they moulting? Just messing with my mind? Or is this possibly a sign of unhappy hermies? Thanks for your replies.

Oh yeah, when they moult and burry themselves do they do so with their shell. Or do they leave the shell to do so?

congraties on the crabs!
When they molt they stay in their shells and usually always burry them selves.
And about them burrying, sometimes they do it to get warmer ( i don't think this is what is happening for you, though), to molt, or to explore and have fun. I have a crab who stays burried during the day and comes out at night!

Your crabs are probably "less active" because they are use to their tank now. The first few days they like to explore it and check out the surroundings and therefor seem more active.

They may be looking for THERE SPOT too. I have 25 now and I have hermies who bury and come up the next day bury the next and so on. I have a few who have done this 4 to 5 times before they finally went down and stayed down. Hermies like to keep us guessing.

yep! when i had my crabs i didn't knwo anything about them. i am surprised they didn't die right away. i guess i was just destined to own them.

that's how we all feel when we rescue hermies. i rescued one yesterday who immediately went under for a molt. i'm happy and feel so good about myself! go us!
