Too Hot?

Post by dubbean »

I live in SoCal and don't have central heating or cooling. I do have a wall unit for the hottest days but my home is frequently at 85F in the summer. Is this too hot for hermit crabs?

My tank is generally 82 or so during the day, so nope! I used to keep mine in the low to mid 70s and the crabs were never active. When it was warmer, they were WAY more active. Now I keep it in the low 80s and they're fine. It might make it harder to keep your humidity stable, but that's about it.

:) this makes me very happy. I had initially planned on getting crested geckos. I got an 18x18x18" ZooMed Terrarium only to discover that crested geckos will die with my warm climate (I discovered this before buying any cresties). Anyways, I decided to make good use of the terrarium and have been thinking of hermit crabs for some time. I am going to keep up the resurch, posting questions, and start buying stuff to get set up. Thanks.

I've never had any problems with 'Impulse Buying'. They're just animals that I forgot I had planned to get.

If this is the air temp in your tank too, have you checked the substrate temp? Hermies should have a variable in temps, a warm and cooler side. (71-73 F and 78-80(?) F)
