i am mixing up some substrate for the first time. im in western australia and cant get eco earth (EE). this is as close as i can get its compressed coco-peat, and made by richgro. all im asking is if it is very similar to EE, if EE is different i wont use it. im going to mix it 5:1 with washed play sand. i took this pic.
EE doesn't have the yellow fibres in it. I don't think there is much information about using coco-peat, so I don't know if it is safe or not. You can give it a try though, as long as you rinse it with some salt water (the same salt water you would use for hermit crabs) and then mix it with some dry sand.
Coconut fibre (peat might be similar, but I don't know for sure) does seem to hold moisture better than sand. You could consider setting up a sphagnum moss pit in the tank. That can stay moist for long periods.
I have been trying to figure out how I would do that. Do I buy the moss from a nursery, where is buy plants. Or do I get a kit with moss rocks and seeds to grow it myself...

I thought EE has yellow fibers in it... EE I have has got a bit, plus a few american people have them too...
I know a aussie owner in aus that has peat, she said it is coco fibers...
I've been using a product called kritter crumble (easy to find their site on google) for as long as I've had my tank and its a coconut fibre product. I use the fine one and you should be able to get it from your pet store or else their site lists the suppliers so you can find a wa supplier
