New to site and crab out of its shell

Post by mac92a2002 »

Hello,
First off I want to say thanks to all on this site. Having read most of the day the different threads I have learned this forum is a wealth of knowledge.
Ok the reason I am post. My hermit crab, Herbie, has left his shell in the last couple of days. he is normally a very active crab but is now very lethargic. His crabitat is at 75% humidity with both fresh and salt water. His bedding is Eco Earth coconut fiber which states it is good for hermit crabs and is about 6 inches deep. The temp is 75 degrees. 2 days ago he left his shell but has not burrowed beneath the surface. He does not have a molt sack but spends hours in the water bowl, fresh, and the food bowl. A couple of weeks ago he left his first shell for another but has recent left it for nothing. He has grayed a bit but his legs are bright red, actually brighter than usual. I'm quite nervous abut whether he is doing a surface molt or is in trouble. I have read extensively through the threads but haven't found this exact situation. If there are some threads covering this I apologize. He is in iso away from his friend whataburger, another crab we bought at the same time. Any thoughts on his condition? He is in a dark area and left alone. He does have a very faint smell, not fishy, and is still alive. Let me know if ya need any more info.
Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

I am terribly sorry for missing this thread. Is your hermit crab okay now?

8| I didn't see it either. You should check your tank for mites. Dip his old shell in saltwater. Give plenty of shells to pick from that are the correct size. I suppose, the help is better late than never. So sorry noone replied! *|

I am sorry to say that Herbie has past. He spent a long time out of his shell and just kept moving slower and slower. He finally stopped moving around and discovered he had past. Although he was a crab he brought alot of joy to my wife and I. It's ok for the late help and it is appreciated. When one asks for help he can't complain of the timelines of it. This is a wonderful site that my wife and I will spend alot of time on. Thanks for your help and making this site great.
