Molting is one of the most critical times in a hermies life. It is both stressful as well as traumatic time for them. But as long as they have a properly set up environment, proper ocean water mix as well as a healthy diet offered, these things in themselves help their changes for surviving the molt. As for molting, yes they do know what to do, and it is important to leave them be while they are doing their deed.
