What Kitchen Appliances Do I Need To Make My Own Hermie Food
I am planning on going completely commercial hermie food free. I want to make all my own food. So what "special" kitchen appliances will I need? I know I need a Dehydrator. But do I need a food proccessor? And anything else?

a mortar ans pestle is a handy thing to have. You can grind up foods or use it to mush foods together. it's convenient when you only have a few tiny things to crush or mix together. whatever you don't use you'll need to store or freeze. Containers and baggies from the dollar store are great for storing food. I got 5 small plastic containers for $1 at my dollar tree. You'll want your own cutting board for the hermies. I found mine at target for under $2 and it's in the shape of an apple.
I would strongly suggest you buy organic mango when its in season and dry it in slices. It tastes like candy! and the hermies love it too.
I know these aren't appliances but you'll find they come in handy!

Great suggestion hermielove, I hadn't thought of a mortar and pestle. I'll be shopping for one.

OOO I want a grinder! It would help with my sick hermie Patchie. She likes eating foods that are powdery and easy to handle. I use a few containers to freeze the hermies scallops. bay scallops are so tiny and if you freeze them individually you can thaw out two at a time for the hermies for dinner. Hopefully you'll be able to save some $$$ buying in bulk and freezing the good stuff

For smaller portions of food I grind up, I bought a coffee grinder at WalMart and it works GREAT!! Not expensive either!I want a grinder!

Whenever I make it over to Walmart I look for things for the hermies because it's all so cheap. I'll have to look next time I'm there for a grinder. Patchie just had some sick crab smoothie and ground up dried fruit. It's easier for her to eat soft or mushy things. She won't eat anything solid that I put in her iso.

Re: What Kitchen Appliances Do I Need To Make My Own Hermie Food
I like to have a special basket in my fridge and freezer for stashing hermit crab food. Dry food is great, but I also rotate between fresh and frozen moist foods too. You don't need to buy a second fridge, but I like to separate it from the food my family can eat. I don't want someone eating a mixture of raw shrimp and meal worms! Ha!

Re: What Kitchen Appliances Do I Need To Make My Own Hermie Food
Sounds really...yummy...riiiiiiiight. I keep the frozen foods in single-use portions in sandwich-sized ziploc bags and then stuff those into a gallon-size ziploc. The poor thing doesn't even close at all, I keep saving them bits of stuff and putting it in there as I'm taking stuff out.
Oh well, it'll do for now until we get a bigger freezer...ours is TINY and we don't have room in our apartment for a separate one.

Re: What Kitchen Appliances Do I Need To Make My Own Hermie Food
I started doing that since you posted about it Emma - I had like 6 little ziplock bags that ended up falling out of the freezer every time I opened the door because I have them in a little shelf in there! The big ziploc is so much easier to stuff in there! lol.
We have a side by side, and we all know how stuffed those darn freezers get. Why did I ever buy it? lol.
