there was a topic on this somewhere, i remember posting on it...anyways, i said that they can feel vibrations, and Wai said that the vibrations are probably carried to them by the antenea. :D

The antenea are used for sometimes eating, smelling, checking/felling/smelling other new crabbies, cleaning them selves (like their eyes), that's all i know. :S lol
---i think they move so much is becuase they have compoand eyes, so their eye site i guess wouldn't be so great for seeing stuff in their way, so they feel where they are and if there's someting in front of them.

Any other ideas?

when i get a new crab, i always bring my other crabs along so i know if they get along or not. when putting bebe next to ike, both of their feelers went crazy, kinda like they were saying hello. then they ignored each other. i think i read in my hermie manual that they do not have the best eyesight...so your response makes sense about them feeling where they are and what is in front of them. hermies intrigue me.

I actually asked that once in regards to our new crab (see Buried, I think). I now agree that they must sense vibrations because every time I take DJ out and start talking to him, he pokes his head out and starts looking around, almost like he recognizes me. It takes much longer for him to interact with my 9 year old son. Even if he doesn't hear me, I think it is therapeutic, almsot like watching a fish tank, but much more fun!

in the hermie manual that i bought when i purchased...actually i prefer the word 'adopted'...tweek and butters it states that the more you hold them, they will recognize their owners and be more comfortable being held. it seems like lemi and bebe recognize myself and my boyfriend. when my brother picked them up, they were a little slower in coming out and walking around. so i believe they can sense who is picking them up, whether it is a stranger or their owner.

Jacicauthon, Thanks for your info - I will keep working with DJ and encouraging my son to do the same!

your welcome weber, btw, you can call me jaci. from what you said before DJ is already comfortable with you. your son should spend more time with him, with your supervision of course. hermit crabs can be such an experience for children, and they're such a unique pet, you tell someone you're a hermit crab owner and all of a sudden they want to know everything! does your son's class do show and tell? that could be fun for the kids. although even letting him out on the desk, the kids crowding around could scare him. nevermind. lol.

i brought mine to school once or science class. We just let them crawl around on the table and they seemed to liek the attention. It was funny because lots of the kids were petting their shells! I kept telling them "They can't really feel you petting them! The shells isn't a part of the crab!"

that's so cute. i guess it really depends on the crab's personality. i think all of my crabs would love show and tell (unfortunately i'm in college, so that's not an option any longer). lemi would especially love it. :)
