Try these foods

Post by erikleeson »

Are you tired of spending precious money on exotic fruits for your hermit crabs, when they only eat a small piece before it rots? Well, I know I am. That was before I tried Dried fruit bits meant for birds.
(my best infomercial impression right there :D )

Anyway, I was at Pet Valu getting some cuttlebone when I saw a package of dried fruit pieces that was meant for birds. So I checked out the package and I think it seems like a nice food for the hermies.

Basically, its dried pieces of fruit, with no added flavor or sugars. And they had a wide variety of "bird food" Dried coconut, dried apple, carrots and greens, raspberries, papaya, mango citrus, and mixed nuts. All natural. All safe.

I bought 2 of them along with my cuttlebone, papaya and coconut apparently two of their favorites.

I have yet to see the results, but for those who are wondering, heres the back package.

Mix these all natural dried fruit pieces into your birds food for some variety. Contains no added artificial sugars or flavors.

Guaranteed analysis
Protein Min: 0.01 %
Fibre Max: 15%
Moisture Min: 12%
Fat max: 0%

The pack was only $1 each too, and one pack was very generous towards a hermit crab. Each bit is the size of a large pea, and you only need 4 pieces if using with other fruits. and it has at least 200 pieces. Thats awesome!

Definitely buy a pack if it appeals to you. I hope the hermies like it.

I use these all the time. I got the coconut one with raspberries, carrots and greens, apples. That was all they had at the time. I was even looking at the hamster/gerbil stuff that is all natural too. There are other varieties. My petstore got rid of the one in the bird section so I am going to try the hamster stuff instead, it is the exact same but different packaging. I did just buy tons of foods from the addiction store though so I will do those first. I do want some dried banana's though so I will probably get them, they don't seem interested in the fresh banana so I wanted to try the dried ones who knows they may like those. I need to spend some time in the bird/hamster section and read the stuff, I did read somewhere that millet is good for them and my mom's bird just died so I am sure she will have that left over that I wanted to try since I read it was good for them. Can I feed them other seeds with no salt on them? If so what seeds do they eat? I am sure she has tons of bird food left so I will ask her for it.

Remember hermies are scavengers, so they eat whatever they find. I think the bird seed is fine for them, I read that they love it alot. ANd by the way, they loved the papaya bird bits. I'm trying coconut next!

Sounds good, and the price is right! And dry foods definitely last longer!

Recently I posted a chart on my blog that shows the difference in nutrition on raisins vs fresh grapes. It was an eye-opening comparison that stressed the importance of incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables.

If you have fresh fruits and vegetables in your own diet, then you can just share a bit with the crabs when you're cutting up things for a salad, slicing a watermelon, etc.

I use fresh and dried fruits and veggies. I always give them some of what we are having but then I also put in dried stuff too. They seem to like the grapes better than raisins and the dried coconut instead of fresh coconut. It is a trial and error thing on what they like and eat and what they don't like or eat. I am getting 4 bags of millet that is for birds that my mom has (her bird just died over the weekend) and I read they can eat it so I am getting it from her and trying it. I am trying to figure out how to hang it from the tank, any ideas?

If you can't hang it in the tank, you can always break a piece off and put it in a bowl by itself. That way you can see if anyone munches on it.

You can aldo dehydrate your own fresh fruits and veggies.
