Dormancy

Why is my hermit crab being dormant on the surface?

Assuming that you have no problems with temperature, humidity, bedding and nutrition, hermit crabs may become dormant due to PPS, moulting, injury or illness. Do not disturb hermit crabs that have been buried for less than three months.

What should I do with a dormant hermit crab?

Move the hermit crab to an isolation tank and place a hidey cave over them. Leave a small amount of fresh water, salt water and food in the isolation tank. Keep the hermit crab warm and humid and avoid disturbing it. The hermit crab may proceed to moult after a few days or weeks. If your hermit crab has lost its claws due to an injury, you will need to hand-feed it daily. See Lost Limbs for more information.
